I don't normally write about XBox games on these pages. Having spent part of the 1980s as a writer on a computer games magazine, playing games all day, I'm no longer excited by gaming. But I do like to bring you news of hot finds in the software world, and my thanks go to Rhiannon for telling me about one that will interest you if you have a Microsoft XBox.

It seems that the popular game Borderlands (both 1 and 2) is free between now and the 30th of October. You can install and play it on your XBox without paying, including in multiplayer mode. Microsoft is being rather ambiguous about what will happen after that date, and whether you will be able to continue playing the version you downloaded. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

But if you have an XBox and you want to play the game for free until this weekend, look on your machine and you should find it listed as being available to install...  Read more
