Pixel XL Not Locking Properly? Posted: 09 Nov 2016 01:21 PM PST I have my settings as: Power Button Automatically Locks: ON Automatically Lock: Immediately PIN: Enabled I don't have Smart Lock set up for trusted places nor On-body detection. The issue: After locking with the power button, all I need to do hit the power button and swipe up to unlock...no imprint or PIN required. Is this normal? :( |
Android Auto 2.0 error msg: need compatible head unit ? 11/9/2016 Posted: 09 Nov 2016 01:18 PM PST So, I read online that you no longer need a compatible head unit (car stereo) to use Android Auto v. 2.0. You only need a smartphone and a bluetooth stereo. (Which is f*&^!ing awesome!) However, when I install and open AA, it clearly states that it will only work with a compatible head unit. I'm confused. I opted NOT to buy a $1000 AA stereo 6 months ago, after already spending $1500 on a Kenwood deck that failed after 2 yrs (cartoys). I've read tons of posts, and all I can decipher is that maybe my equipment isn't yet compatible...is there a way to get any further info? I'm not seeing a list of compatible phones anywhere...only that it's being "rolled out". ?? How do I know? Thanks, T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Pioneer AVH-X2800BS |
Clever dev brings the Pixel's instant HDR+ mode to the 6P Posted: 09 Nov 2016 01:12 PM PST If you haven't seen my post over in the 5X area (http://forums.androidcentral.com/nex...ml#post5554882) very interesting news... Android developer Charles Chow went in and ripped open Google Camera v4.2, the version that ships with the Pixel and is present on the 7.1.1 Developer Previews for the 5X and 6P and wondered if he could get the 'zero shutter lag' HDR+ Auto mode to work on the 6P and 5X. Long story short, HDR+ takes a series of identical exposures and then uses those exposures to generate a final image... works great, etc... but it always had a little bit of a pain point since you would have to wait for the camera to take all those extra exposures. Now, Google tweaked things with the Pixel. That phone has an updated dual channel ISP that can handle more data, so the Pixel's camera continuously takes pictures when it is open, so when you take an HDR+ Auto pic... boom.. instant.. no wait for the HDR+ exposures. Both the 5X and 6P lacked the hardware to do this... or so we were told. Mr Chow noticed that both the Snapdragon 808 (5X) and the 810 (6P) also have a dual ISP... and should, based on stats from Qualcomm and Sony (who make the camera sensor), be able to process a steady stream of data. So he ripped open the Google Camera and started messing around and lo and behold.... He was able to 'turn on' the same mode for the 5X and 6P without much fuss. You can find the dirty details here : Camera NX V4 Bring ZSL Photo Shooting with HDR+ on Nexus, Same as Pixel Phone's Way (Update for N6P) OK... there are some things to keep in mind. First, this version of the mod works on the 7.1.1 Developer Preview build... so no 7.0 or 6.0.1. And I suspect that the modified camera will use more power and system resources as its pumping a lot more data through the phone now. I have no idea how much or how little that might be. So be forewarned. Now the modified camera works the same as stock when HDR+ off and HDR+ On. It's when you select HDR+ Auto that things split. On stock, HDR+ Auto and HDR+ On work very similar, with the only difference being that the 'On' mode will take a couple more exposures than 'Auto'. But the two different modes both slightly underexpose the image during the process. The modified app does things differently. Here, when you open the camera app in HDR+ Auto mode, it starts streaming images constantly. When you tap the shutter, it already has a few shots in the can, so the exposure delay is the same as standard mode. But here, unlike stock, the exposures are all 'normal'... i.e.e the same as the standard shot. So if you are in a scene where you might have bright area that might get blown out or even clipped with the standard shooting mode, the modified HDR+ Auto mode won't be able to do much with those blown out highlights. But if the scene is a little bit more even keeled, the difference between stock and modified doesn't appear to be all that much. So you'll still get the excellent noise reduction that HDR+, but in some situations, you won't get as dynamic a picture unless you flip over to HDR+ On, or just use the stock camera app. Now, there's a cost/benefit here... the modified app is a LOT quicker to take HDR+ shots, at the cost of reducing the dynamic range in certain scenes. The app isn't in the Play Store, so you will have to sideload it. But it doesn't require root, a custom recovery, etc... and if you don't want it, just uninstall the app... easy peasy. |
Posted: 09 Nov 2016 01:11 PM PST Anyone able to use their Home to start up Netflix on Chromecast? Internet search shows up a page on the Netflix site with directions and a few more people asking to figure out how but it doesn't seem to work. This a future add on? Guess I could always ask Netflix on twitter. |

Android 5.01 Build ID LRX22C It seems to go thru charge quite quickly (more than before) and charges very very slowly. I have tried several charges, leads, bought a new battery yesterday (it was 29% charged) a montn ago had a new port and board put in and still all the same problem. I now have Ampere and on 1 charger got 300 and now another 360 but that is max I can get out of 6 chargers including fast ones. Whe no charger is in it shows -460 with max drains.. Telstra 43% Screen 37% Android 14% Android OS 10% I tried to safe boot. Home- Vol Up- On/Off and got a very small blue line at top then it went back into the Glaxy S4 black screen white writing. Can the ZTE Citrine (Z717VL) be rooted? Posted: 09 Nov 2016 12:34 PM PST I've seen links to iRoot and Kingoroot, but have also seen in other posts that those are not effective. Is there a way to 1-click root or would I need to unlock the bootloader? Is that even possible on this phone? |

Swiftkey added and missing space characters Posted: 09 Nov 2016 12:28 PM PST On a Google Pixel XL, Swiftkey is leaving a space between the end of the last word in the sentence and period, question mark, etc. It's also performing odd spacing when quotes are involved. For example, try to swype the following (This is a "test") and what you actually get is This is a"test " - no space between the a and the open quote and then an unwanted space before the close quote. Anyone else? |
Camera mod brings the Pixel's slick zero shutter lag HDR+ to the 7.1.1 5X Posted: 09 Nov 2016 12:23 PM PST OK... once the Pixels got released, it became open season on the phone's APKs... we've seen mods that bring Google Assistant, live wallpaper apks, sound packs, etc... One of those mods happened to be a man named Charles Chow that took the Pixel's Google Camera (v4.2) and modified it to run on the 6P and 5X. He brought along other goodies like burst, etc... but I came across an update he posted that claimed to allow for the same instant, zero shutter lag for HDR+ shots that we see on the Pixels. This, of course.. well, this sums up my feelings: curiosity and attention.jpg Now, one thing that always got on my nerves with the 5X is that there was always a bit of a pause when taking even normal pics. A slight delay after hitting the button until the shot. I wasn't sure where this is, but apparently, it was due to how the GC interacted with the 5X's camera stack. The clever dev here ripped open the Google Camera APK and modified it to go in and access the dual ISPs that both the 5X and 6P both have... sure, they aren't as fast as the Pixel's ISP, but they should still be able to handle the continuous data stream that the Pixel can...maybe not able to sustain it when taking a bunch of pics back to back, but for a single picture.... I loaded up the APK on my 5X and.... my word, it worked! HDR+ off, shutter is near instant, no delay (big improvement over stock) HDR+ Auto, shutter is identical to above, with little to no delay. There is no HDR+ checkmark that you would normally see, but if you look in the internal gallery, it is processing HDR+ in the background. Now, the 5X was always stingy with HDR+ Auto, it would only trigger it when looking at a dark scene (unlike the 6P which triggered it whenever it was looking at a static scene). Here, every pic is HDR+. HDR+ On, you will see the usual HDR+ circle animation and there is a slight delay to start... i.e. it basically acts the same as stock. Couple of things to note... flash... auto flash does not work. If you want a flash, you need to toggle it on. Doesn't affect my usage much since I tended to avoid the flash altogether unless I absolutely had to. I also can't attest to the battery life (we're hitting the ISP harder, so I suspect it'll use a bit more power). Quality... here is where things get a little bit pro/con Normally, when you take an HDR+ pic, the app will crank the exposure time down and take a series of underexposed images. It then takes the best one of the set, makes that the base image, then uses the other exposures to reduce noise and improve the dynamic range of the image. I just checked my 6P and the difference is pretty substantial. The standard image was 1/60s and on HDR+ Auto and HDR+ On, both had exposures of 1/125s. Here is were things deviate with the modified app. That same scene... Standard and HDR+ Auto were 1/60s and HDR+ On was 1/125. This is a pretty key difference. As I mentioned before, HDR+ reduces noise AND improves dynamic range. By not decreasing the exposure time, the modified app also reduces its ability to improve dynamic range in situations where you might have a very bright source, like a glare-y, cloudy sky in the background. If the standard shot is blown out to the point of being clipped, or close to it, HDR+ Auto won't be able to do much. But either way, you still get the noise reduction without all the heavy, artifical processing artifacts. Now this might SOUND like a big deal, but on the 5X, it really isn't. The 5X doesn't like to pop into HDR+ much when in Auto mode... it'll only go there if the majority of the scene is in lower light. If there is a fairly bright source somewhere in the frame, it'll drop quickly down to standard mode. So there really isn't much lost. If you have a TON of dynamic range in the shot, pop it over to HDR+ On, which you would have to do anyway. And this all ignores the fact that the modified GC is a LOT quicker.... If you are on 7.1.1 and want to check it out, you can see it over here : Camera NX V4 Bring ZSL Photo Shooting with HDR+ on Nexus, Same as Pixel Phone's Way (Update for N6P) The app isn't in the Play Store, so you will have to sideload it. But it doesn't require root, a custom recovery, etc... and if you don't want it, just uninstall the app... easy peasy. Hope that makes sense. |
