SAMSUNG NOTE 5 UPDATE / Locked my phone?!

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:46 PM PDT

I had an update this morning for Marshmellow on my Samsung Note 5.
The boot up screened appeared 3 times, and now when I enter my pattern / back up pin, it tells me it's incorrect. I use this pin EVERYDAY, I know it's correct.. What's going on?
Tried calling Samsung, and my carrier(Sprint). All just want me to factory reset.
Anyway around this, I have a lot of pictures and things I'd like to keep on this device.

Memory not released after moving apps/data to SD card

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:43 PM PDT

Brand new Galaxy S7. After downloading all my Audible books, I ran out of space. I installed a 200 gb SD card. I moved the 10 gb+ of Audible app/books to the SD card. [I wanted to manually move everything, but for whatever reason, I cannot find Audible on my phone or on the SD card through My Files; however, it's on the phone.] The app is listed as residing on the SD card. Yet my system storage is still full and my SD card does not show a significant change. I restarted the phone, just in case, but no change. Any ideas? If I have to, I'll uninstall and reinstall Audible, but wow, what a pain in the ****.

Does case type affect phone's vibrator?

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:30 PM PDT

I am coming from a moto x 2013 which I thought had an obnoxious vibrator which everyone in the room heard. This one is fairly silent and smoother. I am not always noticing the vibration so I miss a call or notifications. Could my case be dampening the vibrator's intensity? I had a hard case on my moto (supcase beetle), now I have the otterbox symmetry. Yes I have the control setting dialed all the way up for the vibrator.

How to make a task list using my voice?

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:24 PM PDT

If I open the "memo" feature which came with the phone and use the keyboard I can make lists or a to-do list which has little boxes that can be ticked off.

If I tap the microphone button I can make a list using my voice. I worked out by experimenting that saying "enter" starts the next line in the list - However, if I try and make a to-do list with the little boxes every time I say "enter" it starts a new line, but doesn't put in a little box. Is there some sort of voice command that makes it list the next task on the to-do list? (I have tried all the obvious things I can think of)

restrict background data enabled automatically

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:23 PM PDT

Hi,

Facing issue with Samsung J7 on mobile data with WhatsApp and few other messengers.

Settings - Data usage - WhatsApp - Restrict background data would be initially disabled by default where messages would flow to my inbox without any issue.

Without me changing the preference, it would automatically be enabled and stop receiving messages till I open WhatsApp or I manually change the preference to disable mode. This keeps on repeating :( It happens only with mobile data.

Request a solution for this.

Thanks in advance.

Android Auto, four months later

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:07 PM PDT

Hey everyone,

A few months ago, I shared my experience with Android Auto. I've been using it for four and a half months now, so I thought I'd do a quick post on what's changed.

A few weeks ago, I bought a new short USB cable. About the same time, Google rolled out it's new voice improvements. Not sure if it's the new USB cable I'm using (the original stopped working altogether, so I can't do a comparison) or improvements on Google's end, but voice is MUCH better now. The system understands exactly what I'm saying, even on more complex requests. In the past three weeks, I've only had two or three requests not understood, and anything the system did understand was processed correctly.

Beyond that, not much else has changed, even when I updated my Moto X to Marshmallow and eventually changed phones to a Nexus 6P. I'm playing around with a few local music apps that support Android Auto, but I'll wait until the apps have a more complete feature set until I write about them. Going forward, I wish Google would allow alternate Maps applications like they do for Music and Messaging, just so I can use Here Maps for long road trips.

A note for Google Voice users, if you use the voice command "Send a message to [person]", the message will be sent through your carrier number, NOT your Google Voice number. I've tried different commands and haven't had any luck getting it to send with my GV number. I'm porting my GV number back to my carrier soon, so I won't have this problem much longer.

Next, I'm going to try making MirrorLink work. My car unit supports it, but it's not officially supported by the Nexus line. I've sideloaded the HTC MirrorLink APK, so I'll give that a try and update this post with my results.

If there's any questions you guys have or anything you'd like me to try, let me know below!

Encryption on the V10?

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Has anyone encrypted their phone? I have been thinking of doing it, but not sure. Do you take a speed hit when trying to decrypt? I have had the phone for two weeks, will it take forever to encrypt the phone? Sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but thanks.

Switching between Sim cards - Samsung s7 edge dual sim

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 11:56 AM PDT

Hi. How do I easily switch between sim cards in my dual sim version? I´ve seen in other Samsung models that you can switch when you drag down the top menu. This is no alternative on my phone, there is just a bar that direct to the sim card settings. the bar shows my three decided options; which sim card I have chosen to send texts, which one that use mobile data, and which one that is the standard for calls. Isn´t it supposed to show like two profiles, my private profile and my job profile? And is there any way that I can connect a certain contact to always call from my private sim, and another contact to always call from my job sim?

lock-in 3G

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 11:54 AM PDT

I live in a rural area where Straight Talk Verizon 4G is very weak.
When my S4 running Lollipop is using 3G I get 3 or 4 bars signal strength and
have no trouble browsing or even watching streaming video.

My problem is the phone will often try to connect with 4G at only 1 or 2 bars,
and connections mostly time-out, or fail to connect at all.

Is there any way to lock-in 3G and stop 4G trying to connect?
I see no network setting that will accomplish this.

Why does my Samsung Note 4 keeps restarting?

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 11:48 AM PDT

Hello everyone,

From last month my T-mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4 keeps restarting when the battery below 40%. After 10 to 20 min the phone will turn off and no restarting anymore. However the massage light will turn on and the color is blue. If my phone is plugged into a power outlet it will works as normal. And the battery shows 40%.

Is that battery problem?

Fonts

Hi, I recently updated to 6.0 and now I can't even find a font application that will work with this new software. I have a sprint note 4. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Devil Dog

So very disappointed in my LG G5...

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 11:47 AM PDT

What was LG thinking? The build quality of this phone is awful - it feels like a cheap $99 plastic phone. The removable module at the bottom of the phone is unevenly lined up with the main part of the phone, leaving a noticeably uneven gap. The chamfer/edges of the phone feel sharp, not polished like they should be, almost like they could cut your hand (though they won't). The G5 feels cheap in hand, and it looks cheap. My expectations about the build quality were already lowered from videos I've watched the last couple of days, but the bar still wasn't low enough.

The other awful decision - the launcher! They removed the app drawers, in favor of an iPhone-like launcher experience. Yuck. And for the apps that you can't disable, the only way to "hide" them is to place them into a folder on one of the home screens. Not a great solution. There is an "easy home" option, which gives you back the app drawers, but doesn't allow you to add widgets or otherwise customize the home screens. I don't know what they were thinking, but you have to install something like Nova Launcher to get anything close to a true Android UI experience. Bottom line, their launcher is dumbed down, and I don't know why.

That said, there are some things I like about the phone - the screen is nice. Good color and sharpness. The cameras are nice (took a couple of photos at normal angle and wide angle), though not really any better than the S7 Edge and iPhone 6s Plus. I like the always-on display a little better than the S7/S7 Edge implementation. And the performance seems good, with the UI being very smooth with no lag.

After using it for a few hours, two main thoughts come to mind - "disappointment" and "compromise". The build quality and UI design are very disappointing, and inexcusable in 2016, when there are so many phones (even cheaper mid-range selections) with much better build quality. Even LG's own V10 has a much better build quality. I feel like they compromised the phone by focusing on the modular "friends" aspect of the G5, instead of the making sure the basics of the phone itself are polished. How many people are really going to buy a G5, and then purchase any of the modular add-ons? And from what I've read, depending on what country you are in, you may not be able to get some of the modules anyway.

I apologize that this post comes across as so very negative. I'm just hoping to add another point-of-view backing up some of the YouTube reviews we've all seen. Additionally, I've owned a number of different phones over the years, and this ranks as one of the worst I've ever used. I just hope that LG is working on the V20, and doesn't handicap that phone with useless gimmicks that compromise the basics of the phone, as they've done with the G5.

As for my G5... I will be returning it to Verizon. The things I like about it (screen, camera) aren't enough to overcome my dislike of the general build quality and questionable UI decisions made by LG.

Update S6 Edge without service

Posted: 01 Apr 2016 11:43 AM PDT

I have an S6 Edge I will be selling soon, since I've recently bought a Note 5. I'd like to put Marshmallow on it to make it more attractive to potential buyers. (And for fun)

When the Verizon update is released tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to download the whole file somewhere. But will I be able to install it without any Verizon service?

Thanks in advance.

Bob
