I'm worried that Marshmallow broke my Wi-Fi

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 01:24 PM PDT

I'm using a Verizon S5.

On Lollipop I could watch everything on Youtube in max quality with no buffering. Since I got Marshmallow my phone buffers 80% of the time just to watch stuff in 720p. The Speedtest app still shows the same speeds I had before...

I tried resetting my router, forgetting my wifi, clearing my cache partition, resetting all network settings, connecting through WPS, and toggling airplane mode. If there is a safe mode on this phone, then I don't know how to find it. Does anyone have any ideas for how I could fix my Wi-Fi functionality?

Keeps loading and loading! Set up as POP3 acct so all emails to download ONCE.

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 01:22 PM PDT

Any suggestions??? Bug - bought S7 -set up business email as POP3 (yahoo small business with email on Yahoo server) thru email that comes with S7. Want all my emails from my email account on phone (just under 2Gs) (won't bore you with why-please just accept having them on workstation not OK). First time on home WIFI when set email acct on new phone last night should have downloaded all emails so that when go out and switch to my mobile carrier phone would just have to download new emails when syncs every 15 minutes. If phone needs to download emails over and over to view them all, would take forever and data cost would be enormous. My old Blackberry did this perfectly - downloaded all first time, then every 15 minutes just downloaded new when synched and could just flick thru them. Read that in prior Samsung S (did not own one) used to have setting in sync to set "period of time" to sync - in S7 now asks "how many emails to load"- even if set on TOTAL does not seem to be willing to download all my emails to the phone. Only loaded three months emails then went back while phone still on, and only one month shows. Whole purpose of Pop3 is to download ALL emails in an email account. Then when you delete an email on phone it is deleted from phone and server (if set that way). Any fix for this anyone knows? If this just a limit in the native email app in phone or in Android OS so in all phones? If just this app anyone know an email app for non-exchange and exchange servers that will permit you to download ALL emails in email account set as POP3? Perhaps new Microsoft Outlook app although read can't view Inboxes separately.

Extremely slow WiFi

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 01:17 PM PDT

Sometimes at home my wifi drops to <1M usually . 02-.5M down. Yet my computers still have 10M (yes that's all I get at home), lte is still 10M, I used to be able to just restart the phone and Speed was back, but lately that's not working either.

A few hours later it's fine.

Any ideas?

New(er) Messenger app - no new message icon

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 01:01 PM PDT

My Galaxy S6 asked me to install a new Messenger (blue icon version). Nice cleaner looking interface. Only issue is the main icon never shows the new notification icon like the old one did. I can turn notification on very top notification bar on phone, but MUCH prefer the easier to see number of new messages icon on the Messenger icon. Was this omitted by design?

Viewing Angles

Hi folks,

So, I just got an S2 9.7 VZW LTE version. I'm trying to figure out if I'm being overly sensitive to something. The display looks great straight on, but when I tilt it left or right or up, I notice bluish tint to the screen. It's still bright and I know there's some change to the display when tilting, but the fact that I noticed this makes me wonder if there is something wrong with this particular tablet.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Can the bootloader on the Sprint HTC 10 be unlocked?

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 12:53 PM PDT

I know that the bootloader does not come unlocked for any of the US variants of the HTC 10. However, does this mean that the bootloader cannot be unlocked for these variants through HTCDev after buying it either? I googled to figure out an answer to this question but I kept getting articles that advertised how HTC will support unlocking of the bootloader of the international version with no mention of the Sprint version.

I am looking to buy a Sprint HTC 10 but will only do so if I can get the bootloader unlocked. If not, I'd rather get a GS7 if I am going to have to get a phone with a locked bootloader.

My Attempt At Simple Instructions to Root and Install Cyanogenmod

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 12:41 PM PDT

I finally rooted my first Android device yesterday, and part of the reason for not ever having done it before was the lack of clear instructions anywhere. I did it on my 2012 Nexus 7 which had been virtually unusable since the Lollipop OS was updated, so I figured I had nothing to lose. The problem with instructions I noted was everyone using terms of art which didn't make any sense to those not familiar with the process. So here is my attempt at easy instructions, and the sources I found useful.

Before beginning anything, you need to turn on "USB debugging." That requires turning on "Developer Mode" which is done by going to Settings/About Tablet and then hitting "Build Number" 7 times (it's different in the CM OS). From there you can back out one menu level and see the developer mode menu. Turn on USB debugging."

Next you need to unlock your bootloader and then root the tablet. This old CNET article was very useful, and I used the Nexus Root Toolkit described in there. How to root your Google Nexus 7 - CNET

Note that without USB debugging turned on that app won't find your tablet. The process I used in order was first creating a backup, then doing the "initial setup" process, then unlock, then root. That app provides excellent instructions along the way, so I won't even try to explain them. The "initial setup" took the most time. When you're done with that you then have your tablet rooted.

Next you have to get your Cyanogenmod ROM (or alternative) which you can find here:
CyanogenMod Downloads

You want the Build zip file (a recent one), not Recovery. My process was to download that to my computer, and the copy into the tablet via USB. Copy it into the "Internal Storage" folder. That zip file will install your new ROM.

Next you need to install your new ROM. The unlock/rooting process installed (I think) the TWRP recovery program. You access it by turning off your tablet, hitting power and down volume at the same time until the screen awakens, then hitting down volume 2x (or more) until you get to "recovery mode" as the option, then you hit the power button. This site will guide you well from there:

How to Install a Custom ROM using TWRP Recovery - Androiding.how

But in a nutshell you need to hit Wipe and then swipe at the bottom to start that process, then hit "Install" and select the ROM you copied over and then swipe, then wipe again, then reboot. This will then install the CM Rom when the tablet reboots and you can set it up as if it's a new tablet.

The final thing is to download the Google apps, like the Play Store, Chrome, etc. Apparently CM can't legally have those installed as part of the ROM. I found those here: Google Apps (Gapps) - Download Latest Gapps for Android (I hope that's a safe site--unlike some other rooting sites there were no warnings).

You have to select the correct GAPP for the OS used, and then copy it to the same place you copied your ROM zip file. Go back into recovery mode and then select "Install," select the GAPP file, swipe and when complete reboot.

I hope this helps. If anyone more experienced sees errors in that approach, please post. I realize there might be alternative ways (e.g. downloading files directly to the tablet rather than copying, etc.), but this worked well for me.

One final thing. I had my Google account's 2 factor authentication setup with the new Prompt system. That created problems signing into Chrome and with the Play Store, so I had to revert back to the old text code system (at least temporarily).

S Health share bike ride with route

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 12:41 PM PDT

Hello,

When I use S Health to share a completed bike ride on my SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 I un-choose the default image, select route and what gets shared is the default image and the blue-line route shape with no map of any kind.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you

File Replicator App

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 12:28 PM PDT

Is there a file replicator app. While using Windows I founf a program called Karen's File Replicator. What it does when you copy a folder & then weeks later you would like to update that folder, it will do just that with just a couple of clickes. It only updates the changed or added files to the other copy. So if there is a App similar to this please let me know.

Thank you,
Fred

Seamless Album Playthrough

Posted: 25 Jun 2016 12:17 PM PDT

I'm using a Note 4, is there a way to seamlessly play an album all the way through without it pausing as it ends one song and starts the one after it? Have several albums where songs are meant to flow into each other and the pause as it changes songs kind of ruins it.
