If you're a long-time reader of this column then you'll know that I'm a huge fan of information management software. Something that helps you create lists of things and then manage those lists by arranging items in order. To-do lists, with separate columns for stuff that's been done and stuff that hasn't, is just the start of it. I've also used such a system to plot out the bare bones of a novel that I've been working on for some time.

I came to the conclusion a couple of years ago that the format which works best for me is something which resembles sticky yellow notes on a big board. So it might seem obvious that, if this is indeed the case, I should indeed buy a pack of notes and a piece of board. But such an arrangement isn't exactly portable, and can't easily be backed up. So a computerised simulation of that arrangement is what works for me.
